Finally. The majority of your holiday shopping is over. You’re nearing the end of your gift list and breathing a sigh of relief. Nothing left to do now but kick back with some hot cocoa and watch holiday movies…
Until you remember the stockings. What is Santa going to put in the kids’ stockings this year?!
We don’t blame you. It’s easy to forget about gifts for the stockings. In the rush of holiday shopping for family, friends, teachers, the mailman, the neighbors, and more, the unassuming little stockings can sometimes slip through the cracks. But we’re here to help!
If you feel like the kids always get the same things in their stockings every year, maybe this year is the time to get creative. There are all kinds of useful, affordable little items that fit perfectly into a stocking. Below is a list of some of our favorite stocking stuffers. And to make it even easier so you’re not running all over town the day before Christmas, all of these items can be found at blue manatee!
And if you’re one of those people who hasn’t quite made it to the end of her gift list yet, check out our Holiday Gift Guide to find giftable books for all ages and interests!
These nifty little toys work for a wide range of ages, and as a bonus they’re really clever in design. Moveable pieces anchored by elastic mean kids can unfold and position their bots in a variety of ways with no fear of little pieces going missing. They also double as a puzzle for older or more ambitious children (and we can attest–once these guys are unfolded, it is a real challenge to get them back into their cube shapes!). Not only are Cubebots perfect toys for travelling, they also make for great imaginative play at home!
2. Coloring Books
There’s no denying it: coloring books are all the rage these days, and they’re not just for kids anymore. People of all ages are now discovering just how stress relieving coloring can be. No matter what age you’re buying for, you can certainly find a pocket-sized coloring book to stuff in a stocking.
3. blue manatee press books
You can never have too many books! Blue manatee press board books are the perfect size to slip right into a stocking. From concept books to playful books, and even board books that pull double duty for parents as well as the kids, you’ll be sure to find something for everyone from the blue manatee press bookshelf.
While an old receipt or a piece of last year’s report card work as fine bookmarks, we can all agree that sometimes you just want something a little more. . . fun. From color-your-own bookmarks to these very cool animated ones from Emotion Gallery, bookmarks are the perfect stocking stuffers for the little readers in your life.
Journals make great gifts because they are so versatile. You can find big ones and small ones, some with blank pages and some with writing prompts inside. Kids can use them for school or for their own personal thoughts and dreams. Additionally, Wreck This Journal is a great starting point for creative kids who might not be super into writing at the moment.
6. Fun Pens and/or Pencils
What goes better with a brand-new journal than some crazy, colorful pens or pencils? You might be surprised at how much fun writing becomes when you’re not using the same old yellow pencils as everyone else. A few new pens or pencils can also be a great way to get kids excited about returning to school after winter break!
7. Mad Libs
Hilarious AND educational. How often do you use those two words together? Mad Libs have been around, it seems, since the beginning of time, but they are still just as fun and popular as ever. There are tons of different themes to choose from, and your kids will be having so much fun, they won’t even realize how much they’re learning!
8. Small Plush Toys
Miniature dogs, teddy bears, and other animals are perfect stocking size. One of our favorite brands in store is Jellycat; their toys are so unbelievably soft and cuddly, you’ll never want to let them go!
9. StickersStickers make easy and fun stocking stuffers, and there are so many kinds available these days! Foil stickers, fuzzy stickers, scratch-and-sniff, glow-in-the-dark, you name it. And they can be used in so many ways, allowing kids to add their own personal touch to just about anything.
10. Jump Ropes
You may think jump ropes are more appropriate for the spring and summer months, but on mild winter days (or indoors far away from breakables), jumping rope can be an excellent way to relieve some of that pent-up energy that comes with being stuck inside during the colder season. Why not slip a new jump rope into a stocking this year?
11. Rubber Stamps
For the arts-and-craftsy kids in your life, rubber stamps might be the perfect extra for their stockings. Buy them in a kit or individually; we like the stamps pictured above, created by blue manatee’s very own Miss Sarah.
11. Book Lights
A great gift for any child who loves to read, and small enough to fit in a stocking!
12. Clutching Toys
These little toys look simple, but they are incredibly important for small children. Babies develop motor skills by grabbing, clutching, and pinching these fun toys. We like the Haba brand in particular!
13. Jigsaw Puzzles
Jigsaw puzzles are awesome, and have remained popular toys through the years. You can do them alone or with a group; they work great as a fun family night activity, but also for child who just wants to spend some quiet time by himself. The best part is, you can buy 100- or 200-piece puzzles that are still the perfect stocking size!
